Print material for the Naginata World Championship
A tournament booklet that has to work in a hall full of nations — in a language everyone reads.
When the German Naginata Federation brought the World Championship to Wiesbaden, a whole package of printed material was produced for it. The main piece is the participant booklet: forty pages, typeset in InDesign, entirely in English.
A tournament booklet is not a brochure. It gets opened in a loud hall, usually standing up, often by someone who just wants to know when they are due on the mat. It is built accordingly: a contents page with page numbers large enough to read, forewords with a portrait set in a hexagon, a country overview with flags and page references, the team lists country by country, and the tournament ladders set so that you can follow a pairing with your finger.
Two things hold it all together: a strong red that fills the chapter openers and otherwise appears only as a rule, and a stylised naginata that lies at the foot of every page and carries the page number. Japanese motifs — an ink-brushed cherry branch, the tournament logo — are used sparingly, so that they do not turn into decoration.
Alongside the booklet came an A5 flyer, an information poster, the certificates for the awards ceremony and the design of the cups. All delivered print-ready, with production handled as part of the job.

Typeface
Open Sans in Light, Regular and Bold for text and lists, Open Sans Condensed Bold for chapters and tournament ladders — narrow, so names and nations fit into the pairing boxes. The federation's initials stay in Kefa.
